The Horror! Big Words about Scary Movies


Later this semester we will investigate the horror genre as we begin to look carefully at the the historical and cultural forces behind the evolution of film genres. This essay ran just two days ago in the New York Times. It's quite academic, but still a good preview of some of the kind of writing you will need to deal with in this course.

Anatomy of a Scene: 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1'


One aspect is IB Film we will be working on is how to use film language to discuss how a scene works. Here's an example of David Yates discussing a scene from his film. Listen carefully to how he uses film language to express how he used lighting, colors, camera movement and sound to communicate important ideas to the audience. there are many other 'anatomies' in this NY Times section that you might want to check out.
